This title seemed to me the best way to express a good clear summary of the course that I have now completed and followed for nearly 5 months. It has been a fun, rich and rewarding experience, and to answer the question “The best thing I’ve learned? ”, the answer is simple … everything! Having never given English lessons before or at least never in a “professional” surrounding that is, and therefore being a novice in ESL (or EFL) teaching, I have learnt so much from this course. Everything from grammar to classroom activities, lesson planning to dealing with problems, tenses to teaching skills, and so much more, this course has been extremely clear and helpful in so many divers aspects of this great profession and has certainly been necessary for me for my future in teaching. The fact that I have completed this course “online”, has given me the possibility to work at my own pace, to be at ease to study the different units at my own rhythm, and to be able to take in all the information that will be so important for my eventual future teaching needs. Obviously “practice makes perfect” as they say, so although doing an “online” training course obviously has enormous advantages, I know that the best way now for me now to make progress thanks to all that I have learnt, will be once I start putting into practice all that this course has taught me, and not just learning it theoretically. (This is probably one of the biggest benefits of doing a course “onsite” rather than just “online”). If I had to resume what this course has taught me the most in just one sentence, I would say that it has taught me that a well-planned, fun and interesting lesson is the key to success to being a good teacher. Using the ESA method gives a great line to follow, and makes teaching easier to understand and also gives a good base for the teacher to be able to put into place all that is needed for students to rapidly make progress. Speaking a language fluently is simply not enough to be able to teach it properly. Without method and organisation things can quickly and easily become complicated for both the teacher and the student. I believe I have learnt in this 20 unit course the base for becoming a good teacher, obviously there is still much more to learn and much of this will be acquired with experience I’m sure. Even though I know that even a teacher never stops learning and progressing throughout his or her career. Having lived in France now for almost 30 years and having run my own company, I have often wished over time to be able to occasionally give lessons in English to people, and help them with their ambitions to learn my language (for whatever reason their motivation might be). I have however, never felt totally at ease to propose my services before, as I always thought that I simply wouldn’t know where to start. Not to mention maybe a little lack of confidence maybe in my own knowledge of certain “grammatical” aspects of the English language to be able to teach ESL to higher levels. Thanks to this course, I now feel that I have the arms necessary to confront a class of students, and feel more at ease to be able to do this job correctly and in a structured, interesting and amusing manner. I have sincerely enjoyed completing this ITTT course and learnt so much doing it, and I am now looking forward to being able to hopefully give some good well planned lessons to future students by using all that I have acquired over the last few months, and to having the pleasure of opening a new chapter in my life.
