This unit on course development covers student levels, syllabus design, student assessment, examinations and evaluations. The material on student levels is an introduction to the concept, both what the course will use as well as the Common European Framework. The unit makes it clear that there are many frameworks, with some slight differences. The syllabus design sections was the largest, covering considerations and limitations as well as types of syllabi. There are many things to consider when designing a syllabus and while some, like time limitations or mandatory materials, seem obvious I was not previously familiar with concepts like "notional-functional." I also admit that I had not thought that much about cultural appropriacy – I teach using required textbooks that I did not select – but that is a very important consideration to make. Assessment, examination, and evaluation are all very different but the grouping seemed logical to me. These are all ways to determine the efficacy of a course and the student learning.
