In this unit, the most useful thing that i have learnt is how to design a syllabus and what are the factors to consider when designing and implementing one. Level testing for very young children (3-5yo) has to be informal and spoken as they are generally not able to cope with pen and paper tests. As the children grow older (6 years and above) they should be able to cope with more paper and pen tests. Needs analysis for very young children may not be needed as this might be the one of their beginning learning experiences. For syllabus design, one of the important things to take note of is the cultural norms and taboos. Since most of the syllabus offered are American/ UK based, the teacher can seek to contextualize the materials. For example, when introducing foods, we can talk about typical Chinese foods rather than pancakes and lollipops. Teaching young children will also require lots of resources in order to make the teaching interesting and creative. Props like puppets, costumes etc. will definitely help to make the teaching session more appealing.
