Unit 4 looks at materials available to ESL teachers and how to use them. There are two types of materials: authentic materials are materials that are actually used in the English-speaking community, and non-authentic materials are materials that are altered or created for a learning environment. As much as possible, non-authentic materials should be as close to authentic as possible and should be tailored to students’ level and the specific language point of the lesson. Teachers should also take into consideration how students will be organized for the activity, should demonstrate the activity and have students verbalize what they will be doing the activity to check for understanding. Coursebooks and the internet are good sources for lesson material. Lesson planning helps to ensure that objectives are being met, problems are anticipated, and coverage can be provided in the classroom if an unforeseen event occurs and the teacher is unable to teach. The lesson plan serves as a working document, and a record of what was taught in the classroom. There are no best teaching methods—teachers should always tailor the lesson to the students. Being prepared, consistent and respectful helps teachers to maintain discipline in the classroom.
