This unit covers Materials in the classroom. There are pros and cons to using authentic and non-authentic materials to teach the lesson. Authentic materials are real life and less predictable for the student, it allows the teacher to choose exactly what material to teach for the specific teaching point. Non-authentic material are ready made material such as workbooks, textbooks, worksheets and usually the students expect to follow a book with the course. This can be easy for the teacher than having to create all the material herself and sometimes it is what the school expects the teacher to use in the classroom. However, the teacher can adapt or supplement this material to his/her own teaching points and methods. I personally think it is good to have both available as it is easier on the new teacher and provides continuity for both student and teacher, but the teacher should not rely only on this and should supplement and adapt with authentic materials according to the students needs and interests. The internet is another great choice to use with the students because it can provide enthusiastic videos and songs to stimulate the students. Having a lesson plan is essential, as this is your working document and also serves as a historical document on what the students have been taught. If for some reason you are unable to teach, another person can take the lesson plan and carry on with the lesson. Classroom management is very important in maintaining control and order. You don’t want to be too rigid and you don’t want to have little or no control otherwise the students will just do what they want. It is important to be in control but flexible and able to adapt to different situations. Keeping your class interested and enthusiastic is key for good behavior. It is never good to shout at your students or have favorites or disrespect them. There are some gestures and the way you use your voice that can quickly and easily stop bad behavior before it gets out of hand. Getting to know your students is the best, both for you and them. They will respect you and by knowing what interests them, you can build a good relationship with your students.
