There are four past tense forms including the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous. The past simple is used as a past action when the time is given when the time is asked about, when the time is not mentioned and the action occurred, and when the time is definite as a result of questions and answers in present perfect. The past continuous form is used during interrupted past actions, used without time to expressed to indicate gradual development that took place in the past, to express an action which began before that time and continues afterward, and as descriptions. Past perfect is used as actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Lastly, past perfect continuous is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuous until the last moment.
