Past tenses are important in daily life because people sometimes need to retell stories to others. Therefore, knowing past tenses can enhance a student's English skills. Past tenses include past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. We use past simple to talk about actions that were completed at a definite time in the past. Past continuous can be used for interrupted past actions and actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. The usage of past perfect is for an action that was completed before a past time. Past perfect continuous can be used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. Some past tense verbs are irregular. Unfortunately, there are no rules to help students know which are irregular. Therefore, teachers should prepare past tense lessons well before teaching. They can use flashcards and games such as memory pairs or matching games.
