The past tense is quite similar in practice to that of the present tense. For example, there's the past simple, past perfect, and past perfect continuous forms that teachers should know in order to fully and successfully teach the past tense. For example, the past perfect continuous certainly isn't the most frequently used or taught tense in the English language but it still has one major use in that it allows us to talk about longer actions or situation the past that has been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about.
