Past tenses deal with past time periods. They speak of actions that have already taken place in some way. Past tenses follow the same rules as present tenses in the sense that there are four different aspects: past simple, past cotinuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. The system and strcuture remain the same except for the verb which is now in the past tense. Regular verbs in the past have "ed"added onto them. Irregular verbs do not follow any specific rule to be placed in the past. The verb "to be" is only simple past verb which has two forms according to the person- was or were.
