Paste tense verbs are generally used to describe an action or event that has happened in the past. The four types of past tense verbs are: simple past tense; past continuous tense; past perfect tense; and past perfect continuous tense. The simple past tense is used to describe something that happened or existed in the past. To form these tenses we add "ed" or "d" for verbs which have already ended in "e". Past continuous tense indicates an ongoing event in the past. This is formed by using was/were and adding "ing" to verbs. The past perfect tense describes events that happened in the past before another event in the simple past tense was completed in the past. It is formed by using had/had not. Past perfect continuous tense describes actions that were going on in the past up until another action in the past occurred. They are formed by adding "to be" or "had been".
