In the English language there are three main times: past, present and future. Each time can have four different tenses: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous, making a total of twelve possible tenses. This unit focus on the present tenses. Present tense is used to talk about something that is going on now or that is true now and any time. Present continuous is used to talk about activities happening at the moment of speaking. Present perfect is used for repeated happenings, when something has continued up to the present or is important in the present. Present perfect continuous to talk about something that has been ongoing where the process and the result are important. A few of the most common mistakes that students make are: - forget to add “s” ending to the 3rd person singular to the base form of the verb; - to use the present simple for actions that are happening at the moment of speaking instead of the present continuous; - to use the present continuous instead of the present simple when talking about well-known facts and permanent situations; - use of the present continuous after words that express feelings, senses and emotions; - use the present simple or the present continuous for actions that were not finished until the moment of speaking, instead of using the present perfect.
