Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is a certification course for obtaining a job, which entails teaching English to foreign students. TEFL certification is typically required for teaching in schools, institutions, or private English tutoring. Unlike some other certifications, the TEFL certification does not expire. Students completing TEFL certification either enroll online or attend onsite courses at the training center. Online and onsite TEFL courses are different in nature and the purpose of this work is to outline the differences in training between the two types of courses. Both online and onsite TEFL courses vary depending on the individual student. Several factors come into play when considering which type of course to take. Online TEFL courses have many advantages. The online course can be taken at any time. The course is very convenient and flexible. The duration of the course is about 120-170 hours and can be taken over a period of six months. Students can complete the course at the comfort of their home and need not commute. Student may resort to an online course because they work a full-time job and would only get time to focus on the course when they are free at home. The online course is not set up like a classroom. One need not be overwhelmed by teachers or students. The course is also generally affordable. Students can try an online course without any commitment as well. For example, a student can try a cheap course to see if they like it or not. This way a student can decide whether they wish to continue with this type of course. Online courses have a few disadvantages as well. Students may not gain practical experience such as that in a hands-on job. Students may also feel isolated if they are a people’s person. There will likely not be other students to talk to. As online courses don’t have fixed timings, one has to be organized and have good work ethics. Onsite courses are offered in a school-like settings where there is more structure. There would be an instructor or teacher who would conduct the class. The onsite courses are generally offered for short periods of time such as four to eight weeks. During the course, students will have plenty of assistance and support. Students can also meet other students with different ethnic backgrounds. Students can engage in discussions with their peers and take help from the course instructor when needed. The onsite course offers hand-on practice and interaction with students and teachers. A disadvantage of an onsite course is that it is very rigorous. One would have to keep up with the instructor. As the course is structured and cramped, students may not have sufficient time. Also, for the onsite course, students have to commute to the training center which may be time consuming. Both online TEFL and onsite TEFL courses have advantages and disadvantages. Each individual student should consider the pro’s and con’s of both the courses and choose the most convenient and suitable option.
