Russia is the biggest country in the world. It has its own culture, language particular qualities, and as a consequence, it’s own problems in learning English. Today the most popular way to learn English - is learning English in a public school. There is a number of private English training centers, but the studying there is quite expensive, and many people are not ready to pay for it. Many people start to learn English in an adulthood, when they understand the necessity of the English language, when they have their own money to pay for classes, and when they are highly motivated. In this case people usually the learn language using many different ways, and they are able to cover many problems for learners by themselves. But today I want to write about Russian classic way to learn English - in a public school. The way which everybody start from. Usually students start to learn English in the second year of school, when most of them are 8 years old, and the program lasts 10 years. After learning the alphabet and sounds, students start to learn grammar, and in my opinion, it’s the first problem in learning English. As a result, kids do not understand the purpose of this learning and how it is connected to the language, which leads to loosing the focus and motivation. When children are 8 years old, they are still sensitive to languages. The best way to teach kids is to make them speak, listen and recognize the English speech, using many different activities. The second problem in my opinion is learning too much theory. The English language grammar is very different for the Russian language grammar, so teachers pays too much attention to make students understand it. That’s why Russian students might be good in reading, writing and completing test. But listening and speaking skills are usually weak. When students start talking to a foreigner, it’s hard to understand the sentence, because they got used to read and take their time to catch the meaning. The same with speaking - it is very hard to say the correct sentence, when you don’t have much time to think and write it down on your notebook. The third problem in English teaching Russia regards to Russian provinces, not capital. Plenty of Russian cities are situated deeply inside of Russia, and it is quite expensive to reach them from abroad. That’s why there is a lack of foreigners in majority of Russian cities. As well as many people don’t have enough money to travel abroad and they have never had a real experience in communicating with foreigners. In my opinion this is the reason of absence of motivation and understanding the reason to learn English for many students. They never meet the need of language in a usual life, so they don’t have a purpose to learn it. And the main problem, in my opinion, is low requirements for both sides of studying process - teachers and students. Talking about teachers - in ordinary public schools teachers usually don’t have much knowledge in the English language. Salary in a public school is very low. So, if a teacher knows English in a very good level, he or she would probably be working in a private school, training center or other place, which requires a good language knowledge and can provide a higher salary. Talking about students - there is no one mandatory English exam, which student should pass to graduate the school. That’s why it’s very common for students to finish 10 years program and to lack any proper knowledge. However, time is going on and everything changes. Nowadays many local companies work with foreign partners, that’s why workers with an English knowledge are required. That means the increasing of motivation to learn English, which definitely leads to an improvement of educational situation in the country and increasing a number of Russian people, who can speak English.
