Teachers set the tone for the classroom, and if they aren't careful they can fail to facilitate a productive environment. Teacher must keep a balance of establishing rapport, while also ensuring discipline and respect. Both the language teachers chose to use, and they physical ques are important to students. Eye contact and gestures are powerful tools that help students understand what is happening. Likewise, the language teachers use should be simple enough for the language level, and to an extent, consistent to a certain lexicon that students can become familiar with. Further, factors such as class size and organization dictate how students interact with and learn English. While traditional rowed seating might be appropriate for larger groups, horseshoed seating and separate tables offer different advantages. Activities and transitions need to be planned out ahead of time, for example if the teacher knows they must write on the whiteboard, they can prepare to do so in small chunks and to avoid speaking at the wall instead of the students.
