The past tense describes a past event or state of being and it's divided into four tenses; the past simple, past continuous, past perfect and the past perfect continuous. This lesson covers the structure of those tenses , usages, the errors/mistakes a student may make and the activities that can be included in the activate stage. First we have the simple past tense that is used to talk about things that happened in the past such as things happened in the stories. Tense form : verb + "ed" or its irregular Example : Dinosaurs lived millions of years. The second tense is the past continuous which talks about actions that were going on at a certain moment in the past Tense form : (was or were)+ (verb+"ing") Example : Sara was cooking dinner when I came home. The past perfect refers to an action that was completed in the past either before another action took place or before a very precise moment. Tense form: (had) +(past participle) Example: When I reached the station, the train had started. The last tense is the past perfect continuous which emphasis how long an action lasted until a certain point in the past. Tense form : (had been )+(present participle) Example : He had been working here for Ten years. In addition to the above clarification about the past tense , this unit provided me with some useful ideas about the activities that can be adopted by teachers to make the students use tenses smoothly and correctly , such as story pictures which can help them to be creative and have organized and correct sentences. As well as the common mistakes done by the learners during those lessons, this will give the teacher a better idea about how to assess those mistakes and correct them.
