This unit covered the past tenses. It includes the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the present perfect continuous. The past simple is used generally when a definite time is given, a definite time is implied, and when the definite time is revealed as a result of the question. The past continuous is used for interrupted past actions, gradual developments, in descriptions, and actions continuing past a certain point. The past perfect is used to indicate actions that occurred in the past in the past i.e. actions that occurred before other past actions. The past perfect continuous indicates actions that were going on at least up until the point we are thinking about. I thought the description of the past perfect tense as "the past in the past" was a good way to phrase. I never had thought of a good way to explain how that grammar structure works, but I feel setting it up as a past moment from a past moment is a simple explanation.
