In this unit (Unit 6) we learn of the similarities and patterns in form between different tenses, which makes it easier to remember and apply to the completion of the worksheet and test. As an example, I'll use the similarity in the present continuous tense (from Unit 4) and the past continuous tense forms. The present continuous form is created by using the subject + aux. verb 'be' +verb +ing, as shown in the example sentence,"I am cooking". This is similar to the past continuous form which is created by using the subject + was/were + verb + ing, as demonstrated in the example sentence,"I was cooking". In this case the verb 'to be' conjugated into the word 'am' in the present tense, changed to the word 'was' in the past tense to make the sentence true for the particular tense in use. This makes it simpler not only to understand, but also to explain to someone else (most likely a student). As a native speaker of English, I must say this course has taught me that the language I use with such ease on a daily basis is far more complicated than I have ever thought it to be, and I am realising that there are many terms and phrases that I use (but have never questioned) which might be difficult to explain to a non speaker of the language if one is not properly prepared for such an eventuality in advance.
