It is important to know all the past tenses and when to use which tense to describe what situations. It is more important to know how to explain the different tenses to the students. I think the most effective way to teach grammar is to use different examples and make a time line to show different actions in the past and present. It is also important to encourage students to make examples of their own using the different tenses.
