For students to be taught a new language, they need to be exposed to it and understand its meaning. They also need to be able to understand how its constructed and be able to put it into practice and produce it themselves. Language comprises of grammar, vocabulary, and functions. Grammatical and vocabulary-based lessons commonly employ a straight-arrow ESA approach. Whereas function-based lessons more commonly use patchwork or boomerang frameworks. It's important to remember that these aren't hard and fast rules, and as a teacher, you should determine which structure is most appropriate for your class and the language they are learning.
