A good teacher can make a world of difference in a student's life, impacting everything from their classroom learning to their long-term success. While some teaching skills may vary from teacher to teacher, there are still a few personal skills that are important for all teachers to possess(Janelle Cox, 2019). Being an effective teacher therefore requires the implementation of creative and innovative teaching strategies in order to meet students’ individual needs. This can be accomplished through patience, creativity, classroom management and practicing good communication skills. Teachers not only need the knowledge of different subjects in order to pass it on, but a wide range of other skills is also necessary to keep control over a large group and engage them - even when the topic isn't the most exciting(Janelle Cox, 2019). This can provide new teachers with a real challenge, but it becomes far easier when teachers begin to develop teaching skills and techniques. One of the most important qualities a teacher can have is patience. Whether its managing classroom behavior, communicating student issues or progress with parents, patience is one of the most important skills to practice as a teacher (Janelle Cox, 2019). This skill helps to build a trusting relationships with students in order to create a safe, positive, and productive learning environment. Patience is a quality that will help teachers be successful in the classroom. Classroom management, although not something teachers convey to students, creates a place where students can learn. The classroom is a dynamic environment that brings together students from different backgrounds with various abilities and personalities (Ministry of Education, Guyana, 2019). Classroom management therefore involves knowing the students well and placing them into appropriate learning groups. It also involves having an efficient discipline plan in place that student understand. This gives a clear picture of the teacher's expectations and places the emphasis on rewarding good behavior instead of punishment. Good classroom management means planning well and including both physical activity and independent study to foster good habits in students (Ministry of Education, Guyana, 2019). Students are most affected by the quality of their teachers. Not only do they interact with teachers every day in the classroom, but the quality of that interaction matters for our students’ future (Ashley Peterson-DeLuca, 2016). Teachers who come to the classroom with good communication skills help students feel at ease in their environment. Teachers who are able to use both verbal and non-verbal communication help students understand what is expected of them and help build their confidence in learning. Body language, positive word reinforcement and appropriate and effective language for discipline creates a classroom that inspires students to try, without fear that they will be judge unfairly (Ministry of Education, Guyana, 2019). Another personal skill all teachers should foster is creativity. Successful teachers are creative in many ways. Teachers have the ability to think outside of the box, use the resources that they have to create amazing lessons and activities, and come up with creative ways to handle discipline in the classroom (Janelle Cox, 2019). While some people may feel that creativity is something that teachers are born with, others say that if teachers just take the time to think and use their imagination, they too can tap into their own creative side. These are just four of the essential personal skills teachers should possess in the classroom. Other traits, like being able to adapt, having self-awareness, and having a great passion for teaching, are also on the top of the list of skills teachers should foster.
