I have learnt that there are 12 different variations of the 3 tenses (present, past, future), with 4 aspects (simple, continuous perfect, and perfect continuous) which could be very confusing for students learning a second language (L2). I am currently learning Spanish and find it very difficult when someone will ask a question "write a question in the past continuous form for this verb". It is important to ensure that I know all of these 4 main present forms (present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous) to ensure that my students will be able to learn and study the correct grammatical structures in English. Highlighting typical student errors and providing flexible options for learning will increase the students confidence and motivation for this also.
