In the classroom the role of the teacher is obviously very important. There are many different aspects and roles of being a teacher. The main role of a teacher is managing the class and in managing the class there are also a lot of different things you need to do. When managing your classroom you have to be mindful of establishing rapport, giving instructions, teacher/student talk time, and more. Rapport is very important in determining how successful your class is going to be. Rapport is a close relationship between the teacher and the students where they understand each other and communicate well. It is so important because students are more likely to succeed and enjoy themselves when they get along with their teacher. There are many practical ways to establish rapport. One of the ways you can do this is to get the students involved and comfortable with each other. A great way to get the students comfortable with each other is to make sure they know a little bit about each other and get them to interact with each other. You can get them to be interactive with each other by using pair/group work, having ice breaker activities, and encouraging the students help each other. Another way to establish rapport is the way that you give instructions. Not only does it establish rapport, but it is also another important role of a teacher. Giving instructions is main role in being a teacher. Things to keep in mind while giving instructions is to make them clear and concise, use visual cues, and to check that the students understand. When you use complex language when giving instructions the students are mostly likely not going to understand what you are trying to say, that’s why it’s best to use simple language and even language that is at a lower level than what is going to be taught. A great way to help students understand instructions is by giving them visual cues. You can do this by bringing pictures, using gestures, or just giving a demonstration of what you want them to do. Also, checking to make sure that everyone understands the instructions you are giving is very important. It is best to ask them to repeat the instructions you gave them rather than just asking if they understand because you will know if they are really grasping what you are saying. Lastly, another vital role of being a teacher is managing teacher/student talk time. As a teacher, talking is very important, but you are also able to talk too much. A big role in being a teacher knowing when you should be talking and when the students should be talking. There are times where the teacher should obviously be talking such as when you are giving a presentation or giving instructions, but there are also times when it is unnecessary. You can avoid talking too much by keeping everything simple, choosing what you say carefully, and planning what you are going to say before your presentation or lecture. Establishing rapport, giving instructions, and managing teacher/student talk time are all very important roles that will help you to teach effectively.
