Unit 1 included an examination of the qualities and responsibilities of teachers and their students. It described the makings of good teachers from their personal traits as well as their interaction with those they teach. The unit defined the many roles teachers must be prepared to take in the learning environment and the necessity of knowing when to assume a specific role based on the situation, the subject matter, and the individual needs of the students. The unit discussed the qualities of successful learners and how teachers could foster an environment that motives and inspires their students. It introduced a comparison between adult and young learners and distinctions between various levels of language proficiency. And it discussed several motivations students have for attending English classes.
