This unit taught me the different roles a teacher can take in the classroom, qualities of both a good teacher and learner, as well as various factors which can affect a learner's ability to understand material. There are many different roles a teacher can take, all of which can have benefits and drawbacks. Many of the roles include positive qualities of a teacher, such as being an assessor. An assessor involves giving feedback and correcting students, to help students improve their learning, but this should be done in a thoughtful and careful way. This means correcting students without offending or affecting their motivation, a characteristic of a good teacher. Another example of this is the tutor role. Acting as a tutor allows for individual attention to students, which includes finding out students' weaknesses and giving one on one attention when necessary to struggling students. In addition to learning what it means to be a good teacher, I also learned what it means to be a good student. Along with this, it is important to recognize there are a lot of factors which can influence a students' desire to learn, such as previous educational experience, or various life experiences, or simply the fear of learning a new language. It is important for teachers to learn as much as they can about their students, to better understand where they are coming from, and what experiences have shaped their educational trajectory. A successful classroom includes a lot of mutual exchanges between the teacher and student. This unit showed me the importance of not having a traditional classroom setting where the teacher is just lecturing all class. But to use different teacher roles, which can ultimately better engage students and increase their motivation. Which can ultimately lead to a more positive classroom environment for both the teacher and the learners.
