In this unit I have learnt about what makes a good teacher in terms of personality traits, the ability to form good relationships and good teaching practice. I agree with the statement about how a good teacher cares about teaching but cares more about the learning of their students. I believe that it not simply good enough to ‘preach’ a lesson but to ensure that the students have understood and are absorbing the lesson you are giving. I believe that I have learnt to consider the traits of a good teacher and how I could develop these in my professional practice as I become a teacher of English Language. I understand that the teacher plays many different roles in a classroom which include managing, organising, assessing, prompting and facilitating but that it may be appropriate for a teacher to either participate in or observe their students in order to fully understand the abilities of their students. It is only by understanding the students abilities and difficulties that a good teacher can know what to model and when individual tutoring may be required. I believe that I have learnt that I will have to adopt many different techniques and roles when I become a teacher of English language to ensure that my students are engaged, motivated and challenged. In this unit I have also learnt about what makes a good learner and that these can be determined by many factors such as age, culture, language level and motivation for learning. Successful learners will possess many qualities which include a desire to learn, a willingness to experiment with their newly acquired language and to listen to the language they are learning, such as on television or the radio. They must also be willing to accept that they will make mistakes and to accept that this is part of the learning process. They must also have the confidence to ask questions especially when they are having difficulty in grasping a new concept. I believe that I have learnt what may motivate and challenge students in the English Language learning and that I should be mindful of these in order to deliver quality teaching to every student in my lessons. I would hope to create a safe space for my students so that they can experiment with language and make mistakes without fear of being ridiculed. In this unit I have learnt about how to determine and categorise different learning levels and the Common European Framework. The descriptors help me to understand the different phases of development in acquiring a new language. I believe that I have learnt how to understand the different levels of language learning and that this will influence how I approach my teaching in the future.
