The students always come first. While their motivations, skill levels, and life experiences all play into how they decide to interact with a lesson, ideally all students should be equally involved in any lesson. Students from different regions require different cultural sensitivities. Also, students of different ages demand different considerations, such as fleeting attention spans for very young learners, or social embarrassment in adult learners. Teachers find themselves in a variety of situations from organizers to facilitators, and therefore need to be cognizant of aspects to be careful for in each scenario. Students won't respect a teacher's rules if they clearly don't respect them themselves (tardiness and discipline come to mind as examples). Above all teachers need to keep students motivated and enthusiastic. All students should feel comfortable enough to be motivated to accept corrections yet still experiment with the language themselves. Teachers with strong rapport and an ability to engage students are best suited using this to their advantage in further motivating students. As stated before, there is no 'one size fits all' but a caring teacher and an emphasis on putting the student first is a great place to start!
