The first unit of this course focused on the roles and positive qualities of a teacher who is teaching English. These roles included the prompter, manager, participant, and evaluator. The unit chapter highlighted the importance of a teacher jumping from role to role throughout each lesson in order to effectively teach. Positive qualities teachers must have are the ability to motivate students, be caring and kind as students try new things and be able to provide balanced and fair feedback. This unit also discussed reasons a student might choose to pursue learning English, the levels of English knowledge students may have, the differences between adult learners and young learners and the qualities of a good student.
