Teachers take on several roles; they can be managers, controllers, organizers, assessors, prompters, participants, tutors, resources, facilitators, models, observers, and monitors. A great teacher knows when to take on which role, and he/she also needs to be kind, patient, lively, entertaining, knowledgeable, sensitive and have an ability to interact with students like a good coach in a friendly and non-threatening manner. I try to encourage and lift up my students’ confidence by praising them often in subtle ways, especially after correcting mistakes. Students are true individuals, and students from different cultures tend to act and learn in different ways. A great teacher understands and cares about the differences in personalities, cultures and ways of learning and uses the information to optimize the learning process where possible. Levels that are often used to categorize students are 1)Beginners, (From zero to very basic) 2)Elementary, (Basic sentences, simple topics ok) 3) Low/pre-intermediate (Variety of topics understood and communicated, problems with structures, sentences and vocabulary) 4) Intermediate (Variety of topics understood and communicated, problems with fluency and accuracy) 5)Upper Intermediate (A Greater variety of topics understood and communicated, some problems with accuracy) 5) Advanced (Getting close to native level proficiency) The EU uses a similar classification with different terms. 1) Breakthrough, Basic User A1 2) Waystage, Basic User, A2 3) Threshold, Independent User, B1 4) Vantage, Independent User, B2 5) Effective Operational Proficiency, Proficient User, C1 6) Mastery, Proficient User, C2 Motivation plays an extremely important role in learning. Understanding different types of motivations helps the teacher to further motivate and encourage learners to work harder. Typical reasons why students are studying English could be: a wish to travel, wish to study or live aboard, wish to find international work, wish to be able to communicate in English, and some students just have a genuine interest in languages. My goal as a teacher is to make every student in the class learn as much as possible, and feel good during the process.
