An essential part of teaching is the structure of the course. With a structure, comes a process. The process may not be followed exactly, in some cases it may be more like guidelines than a set process, but either way its purpose is to give direction. When the teacher has a course structure, he/she has an end goal in mind. Whether it is understanding a concept or knowing some vocabulary, the teacher wants his/her students to reach that point by a certain time. There is a goal and a deadline attached to it. A daily course structure is usually called a lesson plan. Why are these important? The first is that it is an aid in planning. Instead of having to think of something on the spot, planning makes you think ahead. It helps you to make sure that you have enough time for what you want to teach. As I said earlier, it also gives one direction and a goal to aim towards. That shouldn’t stop a teacher from adjusting to changing the lesson plan. If the students need to better understand a concept or are enjoying a part of class more, the teacher may want to give more time to that activity and push the other tasks to a later time. Lesson planning is also important as a record. It will help the teacher track what the students are learning and if there was ever a need for another to substitute it would help them tremendously. It is important when planning a lesson to keep some things in mind. First, I find it especially good to note that your lessons should never be scripted. The lessons are not a kind of speech. They should be simple. With an ESA type lesson, you will want to make sure that you have set aside enough time for all of the engage, study, and activate parts. Even if you are naturally a disorganized person, it is a good idea to be organized in your lesson planning. Be prepared for when those students come to class. Even if things don’t go as you’ve planned, remember, that is something that happens to even the best of teachers. A lesson plan will give you something to look to, even when it’s not be followed as you originally intended. I’ve talked a lot about lesson plans and their importance, but what actually should be included in a lesson plan? There are lots of different ideas for that. Honestly, a lot of what you include in a lesson plan will depend on you and your class. It varies quite a lot, but that is how it should be. Some of the basic things that are involved in many lesson plans are learner objectives, personal aims, and procedure. There are many other things that people will add to their lesson plans. To teachers, you should aim to make the kind of lesson plan that you would benefit best from. If you need more details, be more detailed. If you just need the objectives and main points, put those in your lesson plan. Lesson plans are very much customized to benefit the teacher and students in the best way possible.
