It was two years ago when I graduated from university and got my license as a medical technologist. I was looking for jobs at various hospitals but, the salary was not competitive enough to sustain my daily needs. That was when I decided to look for jobs online, and I encountered an ad about online English tutors for Japanese learners. The benefits offered by this company convinced me to apply, and my career started. Working online offered a lot of advantages. I only needed a working personal computer, a decent headphone with a microphone, and a reliable internet connection to work. It was very convenient because I don't have to commute for long hours each day to go to work. Traffic jam in Manila is the worse that office workers often spend five hours on the road. I felt relieved that I don't have to commute for a long time every day. One of the perks of working in your home is that I do not have to worry about work clothes. A simple shirt would suffice because I do not have to adhere to any dress code imposed by my company. Working time was very flexible; the number of hours I worked each day depended on me, so I never felt pressured. I can balance my work and play time. Working was fun! I worked every day. I have learned to love teaching and felt a lot of passion for this profession. I noticed myself reading and preparing for my lessons in advance to fulfill my responsibility to my students. What caught me by surprise was that I grew genuine love for my students. However, after a year a noticed something was amiss. I questioned myself if I was happy. After one year of working as an online tutor, I noticed that being a home-based worker has disadvantages. I realized that I have been working for longer hours each day. Sixteen hours every day was the norm for me. Since the number of hours I work depended on me, I lost control over it. I forgot how to say no. I was not able to establish a line when to relax and when to work. Overwork greatly affected my physical and mental health. I felt depressed and stayed in hospital for a week. However, the biggest disadvantage for me when you work from home is that you lose your connection to other people. There were was a time that I did not go out of the house for several months and lost contact with my friends. I was no longer happy and it affected my work. I became irritable when I teach, and I felt incompetent. I know that I needed to do something before it was too late. I took a break from work for about a month. I spend my time relaxing and figuring things out. I reconnected with my friends and family and learned to take holidays from work. I am now generally happy with my job and life because I learned to balance everything which most online tutors fail to achieve.
