How many languages in the world? Could it be possible to communicate each other without language barriers? Of course, linguists have studied every languages which existed and are existing actively. Many technical language tools such as google interpritation are helping people to communicate in different languages. However, I insist that we need to learn languages by ourselves no matter it is 1st or 2nd one. The 1st language which is 'mother tongue' is acquired naturally from the birth in one's culture. There are no special effort to communicate each other in same language culture. Even though somebody doesn't know how to write their names in his/her native language, he/she doesn't have any problems to communicate. I also had experiences relating to language learning abilities while I have raised my kids in the U.S. Even though my kids were grown up in the foreign country (which is the U.S.), my kids learned their native language without difficulties. My husband and I have spoken them in Korean. Their grand parents gave inspiration to write letters in Korean to my kids. They learned reading and writing in Korean at language school. They read Korean books by themselves. That was the way how my kids acquired 1st language. Acquision of the 2nd language which is English was a little different for the kids who are raised in countries which is not their home land. They usally learn formally from their school ages. After entering kinderganten, my kids spoke English more often. They learned new words from school materials than Korean language school. Now they spoke in English freely gradually while they forgot Korean words sooner. I surely realized that the language acquisition depends on the needs of speakers' situations. The more needs make people acquire the new languages sooner. The stronger inspirations make people learn languages better. The acquisition of 1st language is easier than learning the 2nd language. However, you should not forget this: language learning ability depends on the usage of that language. You should beware forgetting of words and phrases. The acauisition of 2nd language needs more effort than qcquision of the 1st language. I think the motivation for learning a new language help very much. Even though there is little motivation for learning, find more needs for using a new language. Language school, Enghish speanking friends, TV in English channel, or challenge for reading English books will make you acquire 2nd language easier and sooner. In conclusing, I would like to say that acquisition of language depends on the usage of that language. More listening, more speaking, more reading and more writing will surely make you acquire a new language better. Even though you are old or too young, the language acquisition happens in everyday life, in every moments. As a future language (English) teacher, first I make myself to keep learning and practing continuously. I will make many oppertunities to use English in my daily life with intention. I will find the better way keeping interest and fun to learn new words and phrases. I will try to speak new words and sentenses to other people. I will be an example of language learner showing the power the more usages of new language in daily life.
