Because it used in International business, International organizations, International institutions, among others, English has gained popularity and has been embraced by many countries, this has resulted in to introduction of English language at the International schools level, Language centers level and even at a national level, where they include English as a subject just like science, math, among others. This essay focuses on teaching English to young learners (beginners) aged 5-12 years. They are several things you need to consider when teaching beginners these include Keep it simple, the students in the age range of 5-12, their vocabulary level is still low. So bear this in mind that you need to use easy vocabularies for their understanding. Use visual rather than verbal language. The students can easily recognize vocabularies or learn the language through visual rather than verbal. Using colored pictures, flashcards, gestures, or videos can assist the learners to understand what your teaching about. Play lots of games, students at this age (5-12), they can easily get bored, therefore playing several games can motivate them and keep them to actively involved while having fun. Use show not tell method, this improves the students' creativity, and it increases the students’ talk time (STT) hence reducing the teacher’s talk time (TTT). It also improves students' creative thinking, creative writing, and creative use of the already learned vocabularies. Use pair work, to increase the students’ interaction level, communication skills in all the four aspects of the language learning that is to say reading, writing, speaking and listening. You can use pair work to the students to read a certain chapter in a book, you can use pair work for students to carry out a class interview hence improving listening, speaking and writing skills. Constantly praise your students, when you praise them you motivate them to talk more in the class. This helps students to improve their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Use of questioning and verbal repetition drill, this is helpful in the situation where some vocabularies are hard to pronounce or to memorize. This improves the students' intonation, stress, pronunciation. Respond to individual needs, As a teacher, you need to understand the needs of your students. Obviously, in every class, you will find students who are quick learners and slow learners, please pay extra attention to slow learners so that they can also benefit from the lesson content. Keep it fun, use of different activities and materials are encouraged to keep the class fun. For the younger learners aged 5-12, it's a good idea to keep the programs short, to use a lot of games like picture game, hangman game, rock-scissors-paper game, picture game among others to keep the students motivated and happy. Use ESA teaching methodology, where E-stands to engage this includes asking questions which helps students to think and answer in the English language. S-stands for study, which includes pronunciation, dill exercise, worksheets like gap-fill questions, and matching exercises. And A- stands for activate, this involves pair works, role-plays, and presentations. Lastly, don't overcorrect students, this might discourage them from communicating in fear of making mistakes. In conclusion, teaching English to young learners is vital to focus on all the aspects of English language learning that is to say reading, speaking, writing, and listening. This will assist students to improve their communication skills. And to prepare many activities and games to keep your students' motivated and to have fun during your classes or lessons.
