Teaching a class that contains students of a wide variety of ages can be a great challenge. This can be hard because of the language level gap between the older and younger students. When I was in college, I volunteered with an organization which taught English as a second language. Each class had a wide variety of ages, from kids all the way to adults. In most cases the adults were at a much more advanced level then the kids. It was hard to teach at a level that would benefit both groups. When I taught at a level that the younger students could understand, the older students were bored. Then when I taught at a level that was appropriate to the older students, it went over the head of the younger students. It was hard to find the middle line where the lesson could benefit both groups. There are many challenges but there can be many advantages as well. Throughout my time teaching there I found many solutions to help incorporate all ages in the lesson. One solution was to do group work and pair younger and older students together. This was a challenge at first because the older students and younger students did not work well with each other. They were quiet and reserved, but over time they got more accustomed to each other and this setup worked really well. The younger students looked up to the older students, and the older students could help teach the younger students. This helped the older students because they had to have a better understanding of the material to be able to teach it. Doing group work also helped reduce the teachers talk time, it encouraged the students to work with each other and figure it out themselves. Another solution that I used was to separate the older students from the younger students. I would teach the younger students while the older students would be working on an activity. Then I would teach the older students while the younger students would work on an activity. This helped the students build strong relationships with the other students in their group. It also helped the students work well with each other in a group. The main thing when it comes to teaching a class that contains different ages is to spend an equal amount of time with everyone in the class. A lot of times a teacher will spend a majority of the time with the older students who are more advanced, this will lead to the younger students feeling less important and won’t enjoy the class. On the opposite hand a teacher also can’t spend a majority of time with the younger students so they can catch up. This will lead to the older students getting bored and not learning anything new. So a teacher has to find the right balance and spend an equal amount of time with each group. Having a class which contains a wide variety of ages can be quite the challenge, but if done properly it can also be an advantage to the class.
