Teaching English as a Foreign Language or TEFL certificate is a basic requirement for native and non native speakers of English interested in traveling or living abroad while teaching English either as part time or full time job or as volunteering teachers. There are two ways to get the certificate, completing an online course or completing an onsite course. In the next paragraph I will try to elaborate on the importance of completing a TEFL course or getting certified as a TEFL teacher. First I will do a brief introduction of myself and why from my perspective and experience I believe it's important to complete a TEFL course. I'm a Cameroonian, 36years of age and moved to China seven years ago, by then having a Bachelors or higher and a non conviction record were the main requirements for being a teacher. After my employment and maybe three days training I was thrown into a class with no idea what so ever on how to teach. My first year was horrible and I was more of an entertainer or just a foreign face to convince parents. The following year I made friends with certified TEFL teachers and the difference in level and professionalism was clear so I begged help from them and they trained and introduced me to teaching materials, teaching techniques ,classroom management and building a rapport with students. With this knowledge teaching was now fun and I loved it, but I still wasn't a certified teacher. There following years were good but without a TEFL/TESOL certificate I missed out on many chances of advancement as well as many opportunities and traveling trips, and most recently China laws changed and obtaining a foreign expert certificate or legal working teaching visa without a TEFL certificate is almost impossible. Not only China but most of Asian countries now have being a certified TEFL teacher as main requirement of teaching English as foreign language. Why complete a TEFL course; -Having a recognized certificate puts you on top of the list in the market of hiring teachers -Prepares you for all the difficulties and problems you will meet in a classroom -Being a native speaker doesn't automatically makes you a good teacher, completing the course gives you the upper hand on teaching grammar, tenses and many other things you might have forgotten or don't know. -If you want to travel around the world as a volunteer having a TEFL is a must. -Having a TEFL certificates helps facilitate the processing of your traveling documents as well as working documents(having a legal working visa). -Completing a TEFL also prepares you to difference in culture you might experience in a foreign country. -Have a TEFL certificate increases your chances of advancement at your place of work having gone through management skills during the course places you ahead of workmates who don't have the certificate. It goes without saying that all the points mentioned above are based on my experience of being a teaching for six years without completing a TEFL course and all difficulties I went through because I didn't have a TEFL/TESOL certificate. I just got married and father of baby daughter and have great ambitions of advancement in our school, with openings presenting themselves next semester(Principal and Vice principal) I decided to complete a TEFL course knowing how important it will be for me having any chance of landing the dream job. After seven years of teaching in China I only wish someone could have advice me in the importance of completing a TEFL course before embarking into ESL industry, better late than never though.I would any future ESL teachers to start by getting certified in TEFL before moving to second phase. I tried writing this essay to the best of my knowledge and past experience and only hope it will be to the liking of tutor reading it which brings me to the end of my essay.
