Author: Peter Crane A Teaching English as a Foreign Language course is a prerequisite for any person who wishes to pursue a short or long term career path, part time job opportunities, or unpaid charitable opportunities teaching English to non-English speaking people. The opportunities could be in the teacher’s home country, possibly teaching migrants from other countries, or could be an overseas position teaching people in their home country or the country that they currently reside in. Teachers have a responsibility to be competent and the TEFL course and accreditation gives them this competence, coupled with the course suggestions and provided material will enable any willing practitioner to become a successful teacher. Students will come from a multitude of back grounds, ethnicities and cultures, and will have equally as diverse reasons for wanting to learn English. It may well be the case that some students will have very high expectations on the social, cultural and economic gains they could benefit from through learning English, so correspondingly the teacher should place equal importance on the task. Whatever the case may be, should a student find themselves in an environment where English is the primary language, it is very important for the teacher to be extremely competent. The teacher should be able to teach in such a way that the student receives as much benefit as possible to greatly enhance their assimilation into their new environment, providing them with the necessary language skills to fulfill all their day to day communication requirements. This competence will be achieved by completing a TEFL course. As well as the responsibility of teaching, teaching is a rewarding activity knowing of one’s influence on another’s success. Although it is not obvious to the teacher what influence they will have had on the students life choices, I believe I would be a very encouraging prospect to think that a student would progress to achieve their goals from having achieved greater proficiency of the English language under my auspices. Without these skills it could prove detrimental to the student’s prospects if they are unable to successfully communicate in their new environment, which puts a degree of burden on the teacher to ensure the pupils achieve a good level of proficiency at communicating in English. This will also be part of the reward for the teacher, knowing they have positively contributed to the success the pupil has and will achieve, and making a positive impact on the student’s capabilities and prospects for the future in their new activity or country. Finally, the TEFL course upskills teachers and open doors for them overseas Other benefits of completing a TEFL course for the teacher will be improving on existing teaching skills, or for new teachers gaining teaching skills and experience, putting them into practice in the classroom environment. And finally, the TEFL course also gives teachers the ability to teach English in different parts of the world, allowing for the opportunity to have deeper and richer experiences in different cultures to their own, which may not be an option for them without TEFL accreditation.
