In a classroom, it is up to the teacher to provide their students with not only instruction, but the tools they can use to learn english. The teacher has a large responsibility in providing students with equipment that can aid them in their journey of learning a new language. Teachers must take many things into account when choosing what equipment to use and how to use it in the classroom. One very important task teachers must complete for their class is picking a course book. This is important because the course book can be a very useful tool for students both in the classroom and outside of it when they are studying or practicing on their own. It can be used even after your course ends and can be a resource students can look back to in the future. When choosing a course book, the teacher must take into account the price of it in conjunction with their students’ economic status. For example, if the class is comprised of a majority of poorer students or in a rural area, the course book price should be low so they can actually afford it. In conjunction to the price, the teacher must take into account the material within the book. Before choosing a particular book, the teacher should page through it and see if the techniques used in the book agrees with how they teach or want to teach the class. If the book and teaching style of the teacher contradict and clash with each other, the book should not be chosen. In addition to a course book, the teacher can utilize other aids to help their students learn. An example of this are authentic pieces from English speaking countries. Things such as newspapers, a menu, or a brochure can provide a lot of insight and learning opportunities for students. Because they are real items that English speakers actually use, when students understand them, they will feel very confident and feel as though they are progressing. By being able to understand these, they are becoming closer to being able to live in an English speaking country. Although these primary sources are great because of the reasons stated above, they have their problems as well. Since these sources are from everyday life and not tailored specifically for english learning classes, they do not have a level of english. For example, a menu from a restaurant does not necessarily have all vocabulary for beginner english learners. They may have mixed levels in them. Because of this, another option teachers may use as a teaching aid are created materials. Created materials are pieces the teacher creates specifically for their class of students. This tailored approach is beneficial to the students because it can match the level of the students and provide a good addition to their learning. By doing this, the teacher can provide excitement rather than continually just using the course book. Creativity can be garnered instead of static learning. With the use of a course book, authentic materials from an english speaking country, and created materials, a teacher can use all of them depending on the lesson. By using different types of aids, students will not be bored with the same lessons from the same book every class. The course can be more exciting and engage students more effectively, encouraging more efficient learning.
