Renowned author and poet, John Lubbock once famously said, “The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.” Motivating students within a classroom is one of the most important things a teacher can do tasked with doing? In order for a student to reach their own personal potential, a teacher must be multifaceted in their teaching approach. Through this assignment I want to high the three best ways for a teacher to motivate their students to excel in the classroom. The first way in which a teacher can motivate their student is by developing good rapport with the student and creating a safe atmosphere for the student. Developing professional and caring rapport with a student can be a challenging task. A teacher needs to come across as approachable and must spend time in conversation with the student in order to make a personal connection. A teacher must always seek to create a safe and judgement free space for all students. A teacher can do this by never yelling at any student and never making a student feel uncomfortable. Once a student feels safe in the classroom environment they will feel comfortable making mistakes. Most importantly, from those mistakes, students will learn a lot. The second way in which a teacher can motivate a student is to understand and take note of their personal interests. It does not make any sense for a teacher to assign a speech assignment on a topic which a student has no interest. A good teacher will tailor their lesson and assignment plan to allow for flexibility. Allowing individual students the opportunity to explore an assignment on a topic of their interest is very valuable to the growth of a student. A student will be much more motivated to excel on an assignment if they are researching a topic which they truly care about. The third way a teacher can motivate a student is through providing constructive criticism and through applauding good strides. Constructive criticism is the best form on feedback which a student can receive from a teacher. This type of feedback gives students positive direction to take their work and gently encourages the student to learn from mistakes. Mistakes and incorrect portions of an assignment are not criticized or shamed, but rather looked at for improvement. A student will respond to constructive criticism much better than grade shaming or negative feedback. Giving constructive feedback builds up a student and lets them learn from their mistakes and not be afraid to make the same mistakes going forward. In order to provide a student with this type of feedback, a teacher must really spend the time to thoughtfully give the accurate feedback. This feedback has the potential to motivate students to reach higher and challenge themselves to put forth the best possible work In summary, I have highlighted the importance of motivating student and three strategies to do so. These strategies can be followed to improve motivation of students.
