The role of the teacher is of course to teach. And I am sure you’ll agree with me that teaching is a respectable profession that started from very early in time. And if you look around, you’ll find many many teachers around us. A mother is a patient teacher who teaches her children to crawl, to walk, to feed him/herself, to be independent, to smile, to find happiness….. A friend may teach another friend, how to play, how to slide, how to swing, how to have fun and how to make friends. A pet lover may teach others how to take care of cats, dogs, birds, fish and that animals can be a faithful companion plus they needs love like you and me. A stranger in a foreign land may teach us how to get from place to place, how to be safe, how to enjoy the journey and how and where to eat great foods!!! This friend may teach us how to hike safely and that friend may teach us how to survive in the jungle. And the list goes on and on. Do you want to learn to cook, to knit, to draw, to write, to sing, to dance……? For each of the many things that we want to learn, there is a teacher standing by to teach us. Just do a search online and we can find whatever teachers we want. But having said all the above, I like to say that being a teacher is no easy task. It may seem like a simple job of transferring knowledge yet can get quite tedious and tiring. And in the process of transferring knowledge a teacher must guide and patiently guide students through in their quest to gather knowledge, to be a better person and be successful. Also, a good teacher should be someone who can analyze a student’s potentials, needs and weaknesses. A teacher should be able to sense their emotion, cater and motivate, help them solve problems and road blocks as well as deliver sweet success. It’s a tall order isn’t it? Having explained what a good teacher should be a, let me tell you what a teacher is not. A teacher is not a dictionary who knows everything from A to Z, and be expected to give every answer in an instance. Or should anyone thinks that a teacher is a computer or any electronic devices that can produce answers at the push of a button. But a good teacher should be knowledgeable in their own field and try to be prepared at all times. And when the need arises, teachers should assist and find or search for solution for difficulties or problems that may be beyond the text books. There are no hard and fast rules that can be followed. A teacher simply have to adapt when faced with students that comes in all shapes and sizes. A teacher should not follow set education, but should instead be flexible and apply different ways of teachings as there are no two students that are similar in all aspects. Personally, I think a teacher should be portrayed as someone who is kind and warm and always wears a smile. And once we put on the shoes of a teacher, we must also put on a vest of patient, sacrifice time and effort and put on the hat of wisdom.
