As defined by an online dictionary, Rapport is a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other’s feeling or ideas and communicate well. I believe all relationships starts with rapport. For me, it equates to trust. During my nursing student years, the word rapport is essential and important to us. We need to establish rapport in order to get all the information we needed from our patients. This is really difficult during those times since most of our patient would not answer truthfully or would not answer because they do not trust nursing students much. We need to fill out a lot of questions in our form that needs complete details from the patient’s life history, habits, present illness, past illness, every part of the body needs to be documented thoroughly may it be internal or external body part. Privacy and confidentiality is at risk that is why they tend not to answer us. Rapport helped us bridged our communication with our patients. Entrusting their personal details helped us in providing better nursing care plan. We actually have different strategies when establishing rapport. Since all are unique, we need to have different approaches in communication. Our internship was at a private seaman hospital. First, I would ask them if they were the worker or the insured relative. If they were the main card holders, I would ask them about their work and what they do in their ship. They would tell a lot of stories about their work. Next, I would ask them about the favorite place they have visited. They would become more comfortable in sharing their experiences. The places they have been and the beauty of the countries they’ve been to. It was amazing to see them happy and excited while they are telling their stories. After being comfortable, I would then ask the reason why they were admitted, how the surgery was, or what their current needs were. Getting that details will help me plan the care I am going to provide the whole day to make them relaxed and same time calm even though they were in pain. With these experiences I believe that with all types of relationships may it be student-teacher, friends, family, co-worker etc. You need to establish trust in order to get what they need so you can help them. When I took this course I thought it will all be just about English. The rules of using the words and phrases. I was actually struggling learning the things I have learned before. And I thought if I will be in the position of my students who doesn’t have any background in English language it will be really difficult for me. I have tried to study a language which I do not have any idea of its origin, how to write them or read them. All the words actually sounds the same to me. It was really difficult. I told myself that I needed help to learn and must practice. Accepting one’s weakness within is one thing and another to share it to a person whom you’ve just recently met would really be uncomfortable. So rapport is really needed for teachers. Being able to get the student’s needs will help me plan the activities I would need to deliver. They will be more comfortable in sharing what their weaknesses are. Having my students trust me that I will help them learn and would do my best to achieve their goal in learning the language is my priority.
