Games and other fun activities are just as stimulating for adults as they are for students from younger age groups. The games and activities will help bring your class together, raise their energy levels and, most importantly, provide a framework which will motivate students to produce the desired language. Usage of games can vary among students of different levels, but for this summative task, I have added at least one game for each level. Each game description has sections such as a) Level b) Type of Activity c) Procedure 1. Battle Ships Level: Easy to Medium Type of activity: Vocabulary review Procedure: Make 4 groups (battle ships) and assign 4 captains for each ship. Arrange all the captains in a circle, the ships' crews must line up behind their captains. The shooter is the last crew member in line. Teacher decides on a lexical area of vocabulary. Every student (except the shooters) must find their own words. Example: Red fruits, Four legged animals etc. Give a minute to students to find as many possible words as they can and memorize them. Start the game by calling a ship's name, for example the ship name is "The Stars". The captain of The Stars must reply with a word from the lexical area given, for example he says "Elephant" followed by his crews behind him one by one, "Goat"; "Sheep" until it is the shooter turns and he calls out the name of another ship and the captain of the ship called must reply and his crews must do the same thing. No word can be repeated. If the captain or his crew cannot say the words or a word repeated the ship is sunk, and the crew members can join the crew of another ship. The teacher can change the lexical area for the next round. In the last round there will be two big groups battling to be the winner. 2. Sentence Race Level: Any Level Type of activity: Vocab Review Procedure: Prepare a list of review vocabulary words. Write each word on two small pieces of paper. Organize the pieces like bundles, 2 bundles, 2 sets of identical words. Divide the class into 2 teams. Distribute each list of words to both teams. Every student on each team should have a paper. Both teams have the same words. Teacher calls a word, 2 students should stand up, one from each team. The students must then run to the blackboard and race to write a sentence using their word. The winner is the one with a correct and clearly written sentence. 3. Taboo/Hot Seat Level: Medium to High Type of Activity: Speaking , Listening, Vocabulary Review Procedure: Make 4 teams. One student from the first team comes and sits on the hot seat facing his/her team members. The teacher shows a flashcard of a noun/verb to the team members except the student on the hot seat. The team members try to explain the term on the flashcard without saying the actual word. Let each member try to give a clue. Each round lasts for 1 minute. Keep changing student on the hot seat. Team with most correct guesses wins the game. 4. Chain Spelling Level: Easy Type of Activity: Spelling Review The teacher gives a word and asks a student to spell it, and then a second student should say a word beginning with the last letter of the word given. The game continues until someone makes a mistake, that is, to pronounce the word incorrectly, misspell it or come up with a word that has been said already, then he/she is out. The last one remaining in the game is the winner. 5. Whisper Level: Easy Type of activity : Listening and speaking Divide the class into two teams. Line up the players. The teacher whispers a message to the first person of both groups . The game only starts when both players know the message. Then each player whispers the message to the next player in his group successively until the last player gets the message. The team which can repeat the message first and correctly receives a point. Start the game over with the second student of each group becoming the first ones in line. 6. Add a Word Level: Any Level (Preferred level- high) Type of activity: grammar and syntax. Procedure : One student begins a sentence by saying only one word. A second student must say a word which continues the sentence. A third must continue, and so on, until someone says a word that does not fit syntactically or grammatically. If the sentence comes to a logical end without error, the next student may say "period" and begin a new sentence with a new word. Example : "My . . ." ". . . town" ". . . has . . ." ". . . a . . ." ". . . big . . ." ". . . museum . . ." ". . . and . . ." ". . . a . . ." ". . . small . . ." ". . .zoo. . ." Playing games like these can increase motivation in class by helping students relax, open up, and get out of their heads while learning.
