I chose this topic because I think I can relate it to my life story and share some experience I’ve had until now. I am the person who loves learning languages. I’ve been learning six languages by now and each of them I learnt in different way. My University Degree is in Turkish language and Literature and the life brought me to live in Turkey. I started working in translation, but it was boring for me after a while. I decided to try something else. In my country I used to teach Turkish language in Secondary school, but I didn’t have any experience with kindergarten. Turkey is a very beautiful country and the most beautiful city is Istanbul, where I started my life. People here don’t speak English very well. Sometimes in a touristic area you can’t find anyone who can help you in English. That’s why they employ a big number of foreigners who can speak English fluently in private schools. They start teaching students from very young age, which is very good for the future of the country. I started working in Kindergarten with four years old students. It was so different experience for me. For beginning my employee didn’t ask any TEFL certificate, just my University Degree. Later on, since I wanted to change the school, I realized that every school asks for the certificate beside a University degree. This time I found a better working place and I wanted to learn something more about teaching and to get my Certificate. It is really needed for every teacher in order to understand how the classroom functions and how to deal with students. Working with young learners is much different than working with older ones. First what I learned during these two years is that young learners, in this case kindergarteners, need connection. It is so much important to behave nice with them, show them your love in order to get their respect and attention. I just must speak English with them, which is very hard. They are not used to understand any of it but I still need to keep their attention. In this case visuals are very important during the lesson. Five year old students start to learn reading and writing. Here is one example of my lesson. During the course I learned the names of the lesson phases and how to separate them better. This organization is very important since I don’t have time to leave kindergarteners alone while thinking ”what to do next” during the lesson. I usually start my lesson with a “Mystery box”. I put some object related to the topic of the lesson and let them ask questions about it. This is the Engage stage where I let them think and speak in English. When I have Literacy lessons, next what I do is to show them the book that we will betreading together. I mostly use projector and show them pictures on a big screen, they love it. I let them say what they see on the pictures. During the Study phase I show them new letter, and repeat the ones we already learned. We start reading together. After first reading I can see which words they are struggling with. Usually I cut out some new vocabulary and find 3D objects of the same words. In the Activate phase they come one by one and match the word with the object. Sometimes I just give them a worksheet to fill up the words needed. Taking this course helps in improving our teacher skills and giving us opportunity to discover different countries while teaching.
