Unit one begins by providing us with insights into the qualities and roles of a teacher. A teacher should have a love for teaching, should be knowledgable in the subject, be patient and able to build rapport with learners. A teacher who is able to motivate learners by using a variety of activities and taking on different roles will likely have students who are more engaged in the lessons. Being a manager and taking control of a class in a teacher centered environment is sometimes necessary, but should not be used all the time. A teacher who takes on different roles will model, organize activities, observe and monitor, be a participant, facilitate, prompt and assess learners in a variety of ways. The next focus of the unit is on learners. Learners are grouped into six different levels based on accuracy and fluency. The learner's age, culture, language level and motivation are factors that can influence success. Adult and young learneres may have different motivations. Learners who are in an environment in which they feel the teacher truly cares about their learning and provides them with level appropriate, varied lessons, will likely be more motivated. This unit reinforced a lot of my own beliefs as an elementary teacher. Building rapport with learners is a very important aspect in building trust and learning. Where there is rapport, there is mutual respect, flow and success.
