Establishing a positive relationship between a teacher and his or her students is paramount for all the students' English-learning success. It is not an easy task for the teacher, as he or she must balance a number of roles in the classroom while simultaneously attending to each students learning ability. Every student has their particular strengths and weaknesses, so the teacher must find those and nurture these differences while managing the entire class as a whole. Indeed, this balancing act consists of nine distinct roles that might need to be used at the same time, or in piece-meal, according to the particular lesson. From manager to observer, the roles vary in their function but are all important. The roles are determined by the stages or timing in the lesson and the teacher will naturally know when to switch the roles accordingly. Facilitating these roles successfully, attending to students' learning abilities and actively engaging in the lessons are some of the tools for making a "good teacher." Although teachers have a heavy responsibility and leading role in the learning process, students also play a role if they want a successful outcome. As teachers strive to be "good teachers", students need to be "good learners." This means a willingness to learn, experiment with it (practice and not be afraid to make mistakes) and--just like a good teacher--patience. Teachers are responsible for encouraging a student to be a "good learner." Teachers must realize many factors in determining how best to teach their students. These factors include: culture, age and level of language. Age and culture are the most obvious factors--a teacher should know immediately how to teach the students based on these factors. The younger the student, the more action and play are needed. The older students will react best to discussion, lessons and conversation. The less obvious factors are the level of the students language. Is the student at a beginning level, advanced or somewhere in between? Once the teacher knows the level of the student, he or she will know how to engage the student, teach the student, motivate, direct and achieve the success for which the student strives.
