Unit 1: Teachers and Learners focused on providing an overview of what to expect as a teacher and what to expect from students. It listed the different possible roles of a teacher, including manager, organizer, prompter, and model; additionally, this unit described the characteristics of a good teacher, which includes a strong knowledge of the subject being taught, good rapport with students, and being patient and kind. This unit gave a description of an ideal learner which includes an eagerness to learn, openness to experimentation with language, open to being corrected, as well as a good listener. I also learned the basic breakdown labels for language learning levels, which include the following: beginner, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. These levels correspond with the levels determined by the Common European Framework. Finally, the unit described some of the differences between youth and adult learners. Adult learners tend to be more motivated and have fixed views on learning, and struggle with feeling nervous and self-conscious. Teen learners also struggle with participating, as they generally feel less motivated and more self-conscious in the classroom. The younger the learners, the more open they are to trying new things. Very young learners do well with games and singing. Unit 1 ended with giving some common reasons why students are learning English--these include study, travel, and work.
