Parts of speech are classifications of words. All of these classifications have rules as to their placement and contribution to a sentence and knowing these rules can help us to understand how to use these words with the most grammatical accuracy and in a way which will create our desired emphasis as well as most accurately convey what we wish to communicate. For example, whether the noun or adjectives are put first will decide which one carries the most emphasis. Classes of words have sub-classes which more accurately classify them. For example, the word ‘best’ is an adjective because it describes a noun (e.g. a person, place, animal, quality or state). It is also a comparative adjective because it compares two nouns (e.g. two people, birds or countries) and it is also a superlative because it is the highest possible degree.
