Once again, I would like to apply what I have learned in this Unit in relation to the Italian education system. The word Grammar means different things to different people with different backgrounds. To Italian students it mainly means an analytical and terminological study of sentences. However, often Italian students (and, in general, the traditional educational system in Italy) think it is more important to know the theory than the practical usage of the language. Instead, modern teaching approaches suggest that Grammar connotes to correctness or incorrectness of the language that a speaker produces. When teaching English, teachers should help Italian students understand that it is not the case that someone wrote a Grammar book and then the language develops; it is, infact, the opposite: by analysing patterns in the use of the language it is possible to identify rules, and, by analysing the real language usage it is easier to remember how to use correctly certain parts of speech. Grammar is indeed indispensable for students; but it should be considered as the arrival point of a broader reflection on the language, rather than the starting point of learning. This approach would help students accepting the numerous exceptions that English presents, without getting demotivated or frustrated.
