Diary/journals: what were u doing at 7PM on Monday? Telling stories. c) Past perfect--retell stories from the end and describe what had happened . -After he had finished lunch, he decided to rest. d) Past perfect continuous-- Before going to bed, she had been reading for 2 hours. Task 7 –How would you explain the difference in structure and usage between these tenses to a low-level student? Illustrate your explanations with example sentences of your own: a) Past simple and past continuous i) Explanation of differences in structure: Simple-just mean the action happened in the past. Past continuous-the action happen in the definite time point in the past. ii) Differences in usage: Simple-sub+v-ed. PC-sub+was/were+v-ing iii) Example sentences: I watched movie yesterday. -I was watching movie at yesterday 7PM. b) Past simple and present perfect i) Explanation of differences in structure: PS-happened in the past. PP-action happen before now and maybe continue ii) Differences in usage: PS-sub+v-ed, PP-sub+have/has+pp iii) Example sentences:PP-I have watched TV for 2 hours. c) Present perfect and past perfect i) Explanation of differences in structure: PP-action happen before now and maybe continue. Past P-action happened before the time piont in the past, and maybe be continue after the past time point. ii) Differences in usage: Pres P- sub+have/has+pp. Past P-sub+had+pp. iii) Example sentences: PP-I have watched TV for 2 hours. Past P-I had watched TV for 2h when she came back.
