I think it will be easier for students to learn the different usages of the verb tenses than to remember the grammatical names for each past tense. Using a timeline and a variety of pictures of events may help in clarifying the different locations in time when an event took place. Mimes would also be effective to demonstrate tense differences such as in the sentence "I was walking to class when I fell." Using relia such as clocks set to various times of the day and positioned next to images of different events would be helpful.
