Unit 6 gave an overview of using the past tense and how it is not too different from the present tenses. The main thing I learnt from unit 6 is that there are certain similarities in the usage and the form of the present and past tenses. For all continuous forms the verb 'to be' plus the 'ing' form of the verb is used. Moreover, all perfect forms feature some form of the verb 'to have' and the past participle form of the verb. Lastly, all perfect continuous forms feature some form of the verb 'to have', 'been', plus the 'ing' form of the verb. In addition, unit 6 provided an overview on usages of the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect and the past perfect continuous. The past simple is used for actions completed in the past at a specific time. There are multiple uses for the past continuous, including for interrupted past actions and to express an action that began before a time and likely continued after it. The past perfect is the equivalent of the present perfect. Lastly, the past perfect continuous is used to talk about longer actions in the past that went on continuously and up to the past moment being thought about.
