There are 4 forms of Past tense that you can compare to the Present forms: Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continues. All of them indicate the specific time of the action, whether it continued for some period of time, it had finished by curtain point or was happening while the other action occurred.
